The New Milford

For over 50 years, Woldemar Neufeld chronicled the natural
and human landscape of New Milford in his wonderful
paintings and block prints. To celebrate the 300th
Anniversary of the town, the New Milford Tricentennial
Commission and the Woldemar Neufeld Estate are publishing New
Milford Portfolio, a collection of those works. Over the
years, Woldemar's work has been hugely popular in New Milford.
There is hardly a public building in town today that doesn't
display an image he created, and there is hardly a community
cause that he didn't support with donations of his work.
When Connecticut Governor Abraham A. Ribicoff came to New
Milford for the 250th Anniversary in 1957, the town wanted to
give him a suitable memento of the occasion, so they presented
him with a painting by Woldemar. That work is one among
many in the "New Milford Portfolio." Some of the scenes in
the book will be familiar - buildings and landscapes that remain
unchanged to this day. But other works record farms,
buildings, and open spaces that no longer exist, and so the New
Milford Portfolio is both an artistic and historic document.
The book will include over 80 full-page color plates as well as
many black-and-white images, a biography of the artist, and a
catalog of every known New Milford work. It will be a
treasured and timeless remembrance of New Milford as it enters
its fourth century. |
